Lighting infrastructure is bought on a capital budget and owned on a maintenance budget. The decisions that determine the second are almost all made during the first.
The interface problem
A pole, its base plate, its foundation bolts and the concrete foundation are usually specified together and procured separately. When the bolt circle on the cast foundation does not match the base plate that arrives, the correction happens on site — with a grinder, on a structure that was engineered on the assumption that it would not be.
Specifying the pole, base plate, foundation bolts and casting template as one supply scope removes the interface entirely. It is the single most effective specification decision available on a lighting project.
The access problem
- Junction door position relative to the kerb and traffic direction
- Door size against the actual terminal block and gear to be fitted
- Cable entry position relative to the foundation duct
- For high masts, whether maintenance requires working at height at all
None of these affect the structural calculation. All of them determine what maintenance costs for the next two decades.
The coating problem
Coating specifications are frequently carried over between projects in different environments. A system that performs well on an inland urban road can fail early within a few kilometres of a coast. Exposure environment should be stated in the specification, not assumed from the last project.
The cheapest pole to install is rarely the cheapest pole to own.
None of this is exotic engineering. It is a matter of specifying the system rather than the component, and of stating the environment the structure will actually live in.
