Plain washers distribute bearing load across a wider area and protect the finished surface beneath the fastener. Thickness and hardness are functional specifications, not incidental details — a washer too soft for the load simply deforms and stops distributing anything.
Washers are supplied to the specified type and dimension, with finish matched to the fastener assembly.
